“People will forgive you for anything — but success.” Sometimes a single sentence stops you in your tracks.
When I heard Frank Skinner say those words, I paused the podcast and sat with them for a while. Not because I lack success — I’ve built something I’m proud of over more than 15 years — but because it’s not the glossy, public kind that makes headlines. And that’s exactly why his words put shape to something I’d quietly felt for years. They made me reflect not only on how people respond to the work I do — or don’t — but also on my own assumptions. Assumptions about how the world works. About support. About what we owe each other when we know someone is building something meaningful. I’ve always believed it’s right to celebrate the efforts and successes of those we know. The nature of that celebration might vary, of course — depending on how close we are, or how well we understand what they’re doing — but still, to celebrate at all has always felt like a natural, decent instinct. I realise part of this instinct to celebrate others may be shaped by my own upbringing. Growing up in religious circles, we were taught not to seek or value the appreciation of others. Any ability or achievement was seen as “God’s gifting,” not something to reflect on or take personal encouragement from. Perhaps that’s why my natural wish to recognise and celebrate the efforts of others stands out to me — because it’s something I’ve had to consciously embrace, almost in defiance of early conditioning. And yet… not everyone operates that way. The Silence That Surrounds Certain Efforts Over more than 15 years of building Future Point 4 Business, I’ve occasionally received kind words, testimonials, and quiet gestures of encouragement — often through structured channels, sometimes informally. I’m grateful for them all. But if I’m honest, I can count on one hand — with fingers to spare — the number of people in my wider social or professional circles who have ever offered public, unprompted, wholehearted encouragement for what I do. The kind of thing that simply says: “I see you. Well done. This matters.” Even when I’ve shared about AfricAspire™ — a cause close to my heart, focused on nurturing entrepreneurial potential in English-speaking Africa — the response has often been curiously quiet. Not negative. Just… silent. And I find myself wondering: Why is that? Frank Skinner's Truth, and a Truth of My Own Now, to be clear — Frank Skinner is hardly under-celebrated. He’s a household name. A comedy icon in Britain. But that’s precisely what made his comment so compelling. If even someone that visible senses a subtle resentment of success, what hope is there for the rest of us quietly building in the background? Perhaps it’s true:
Quiet Success Still Counts There are different kinds of success. Some chase the limelight. Others pursue alignment. At Future Point 4 Business, I’ve chosen to build from clarity, integrity, and purpose — helping others do the same. That might not generate headlines, but it creates real transformation: businesses that know who they are, why they exist, and how to communicate meaningfully with the people they serve. But even here, I’ve had to ask myself: Was I naïve to think the support would come naturally? Do people struggle to celebrate someone they know, especially when the journey is long and unfamiliar? I don’t ask with bitterness — just curiosity. And a growing awareness that quiet success often walks alone. If You’re Building in Silence, You’re Not Alone If this speaks to something you’ve felt — if you’re building, quietly, steadily, purposefully — and the recognition hasn’t come the way you expected… Know this:
This is part of why I do what I do. Because when applause is inconsistent — when support is unpredictable — you need a strategy that’s clear, a message that holds, and a brand that reflects your truth. Let’s talk, if this resonates. I’d be honoured to help you build something meaningful — not because others are watching, but because you are. #QuietSuccess #UnseenEffort #PurposefulWork #SlowGrowth #DeepWork #KeepGoing #ResilientLeadership #BuildingInSilence #SuccessWithoutApplause #TheLonelyPath #SupportEachOther #CelebrateOthers #EncourageGrowth #EmotionalTruth #SeenAndUnseen #SuccessIsNotLoud #ReflectionsOnSuccess #WalkYourPath #RealTalk #ClarityInBusiness #ValuesDriven #AuthenticBranding #FuturePoint4Business #CourageousEntrepreneurship #PurposeLedBusiness #MeaningfulWork #LeadershipWithHeart #BrandClarity #BusinessWithSoul By Phil Avery ACIM Future Point 4 Business | Founder For more than 15 years, we’ve supported businesses across the UK, the EU, Africa, and Asia in shaping, refining, and strengthening their brands—strategically, visually, and commercially.
