Every so often, a small phrase appears from nowhere and catches at something deeper inside you. Not because it’s clever. Not because it’s new. But because it feels quietly, undeniably true. For me, it was this: “I’m here because you are.” Five ordinary words. Six soft syllables. Yet they’ve stayed with me. I can’t even remember where I first heard them — perhaps on a podcast during a long journey, or tucked away in an article I read too quickly. But as soon as I heard them, something settled. Something recognised itself.
Because that — right there — is the essence of why a business exists. Or should. Not “I’m here because it's my idea.” Not “I’m here because I want to succeed.” Not even “I’m here because I’m passionate about what I do.” But simply:“ I’m here because you are.” Because someone, somewhere, needs what you offer. Everything else comes after. Learning this long before I had the words Long before Future Point 4 Business existed, and long before I started talking about clarity or brand or messaging, I think I was learning this truth without realising it. In my twenties, I volunteered as a youth worker in the small village of Chailey, East Sussex, originally at a local church and then as an independent. There was no strategy, no grand vision — just the simple instinct to notice the young people who were drifting through their evenings with nothing much to do. I used to walk through the village and stop to talk with them. Not with a plan. Just with a question: “If I set something up… what would you actually want?” It was humble at first — a hall here, a borrowed room there, then a secondary school sports hall facility. But something surprising happened. They showed up. And because they showed up, I kept going. That was the heart of it. And slowly, things grew. Funding appeared, venues opened up and stakeholders began to take notice. And before long, young people from the tiniest Sussex villages within the secondary school's catchment area were travelling further than they ever imagined they would — Northern Ireland, the Shetland Islands (yes!), France, the Netherlands, Italy, Africa. For many, it was their first time on a plane. Their first time away from home. Their first glimpse of something bigger. And it happened for one simple reason: I was there because they were there. Not the other way around. Looking back now, I can see that this gentle act of asking — What do you need? Who are you? What matters to you? — was the beginning of everything I do now. I didn’t call it brand clarity. I didn’t call it market positioning. I didn’t call it purpose. I was simply responding to “you.” Where this still shows up in my everyday life Even now, in my fifties, this idea keeps appearing in the places I feel most at ease. Take Marks & Spencer, for example. I often work in their communal coffee area (as I am doing now!). Over time the staff have come to know me — not as a customer in a queue, but by name. They notice when I’ve not been around. They welcome me back warmly when I return from travelling. There’s no script for that. No training manual. No “brand tone of voice.” It’s simply human. It’s “I’m here because you are.” And it works — not because it’s impressive, but because it’s true. What this means for business — and for clarity When I sit with business owners — from start-ups to established clients — I often hear the same phrase: “Our target audience? Everyone.” And each time, gently, we go back to the start. A business doesn’t exist for “everyone.” A brand doesn’t speak to “everyone.” A message doesn’t land with “everyone.” It exists, speaks, and lands because someone is there — a particular person, with a particular set of hopes, needs, struggles, and ambitions. And that someone is the reason your business makes sense at all. Clarity begins the moment you recognise who that person actually is. Because once you see them — truly see them — everything else becomes easier: Your message sharpens. Your services make more sense. Decisions become lighter. Your brand becomes human again. A quiet final thought Perhaps that’s why these five words felt so right to me, particularly now, in a season where life has left me a little bruised and a little tired. There is something deeply grounding about the idea that we exist — in life, in business, in service — in response to one another. Not to everyone. Just to someone. The right someone. And maybe that is where purpose truly lives. Not in the noise. Not in the struggle to be seen. But in the quiet truth at the centre of all meaningful work: I’m here because you are. And this is the spirit behind Future Point 4 Business — helping businesses rediscover the “you” at the heart of their work. #BrandClarity #PurposeDrivenBusiness #HumanCentredBranding #BusinessReflection #CustomerConnection #WhyBusinessExists #SmallBusinessUK #ServiceLeadership #BrandStrategy #EntrepreneurMindset #FuturePoint4Business #CLARITYoverNoise #CLEARworx By Phil Avery ACIM Future Point 4 Business | Founder For more than 15 years, we’ve supported businesses across the UK, the EU, Africa, and Asia in shaping, refining, and strengthening their brands—strategically, visually, and commercially.
